People seek happiness daily, but it often slips away from them. Often, they feel happiness can be theirs if their circumstances are extraordinary. People chase happiness every day, but it often evades them.

I call this getting stuck in the “if only” mindset. Our relationship would be healthier if my partner would treat me with more respect. I would be satisfied if I could just land the ideal job. Everything would be easier if the kids were grown and on their own. The list could go on endlessly.

The “if only” mindset can result in a considerable amount of lost time and missed opportunities. Many individuals fall prey to this way of thinking, and as a result, they spend the majority of their lives feeling dissatisfied and unfulfilled. They become fixated on hypothetical scenarios and what-ifs, which prevents them from fully embracing and enjoying their present circumstances. This prolonged state of discontent can lead to a life that feels largely wasted, as they continuously wait for external conditions to change rather than taking proactive steps to find happiness and fulfillment in the here and now.

The issue lies in their belief that happiness will somehow find its way to them passively. It often seems like a fleeting possession, and when moments of bliss do arrive, they are so transient that they quickly slip away. This cycle perpetuates a longing for sustained happiness, leaving them continuously seeking without finding lasting fulfillment.

Many people wrongly think that happiness is just a temporary emotion. I’m here to tell you that joy isn’t just a mindset—it can also be a lifestyle. By following a few straightforward principles, you can experience happiness in your daily life consistently.

It’s essential to begin by learning to live in the present moment. Embracing the now is crucial because the past is already behind us, and the future is uncertain. By focusing on the present, we can fully engage with our experiences and make the most of each moment as it unfolds.

To embark on this journey, it is vital to cultivate a practice of living in the present moment. Acknowledge that yesterday is a chapter closed, and tomorrow is a horizon yet to unfold, making it imperative to anchor yourself in the present. By doing so, you can fully immerse yourself in the richness of each moment, appreciating its unique experiences and opportunities for growth.

If I want to stay in Utah while living in California, I need to move to another state. To be in that state, I need to make a few adjustments. In this scenario, we can choose to take a train. The train must be heading in the right direction to reach our destination. We must pay attention to the train we board, or we risk going off course and ending up somewhere undesirable.

Think of this train as your mind. Yes, that’s right, your informed perspective. To avoid living in Texas, you need to align with the right mindset. Allowing any random idea to occupy your mind can lead you in circles, preventing you from reaching your desired destination.

The next question is, “How do we board the right train?”

The price one must pay to learn from the right instructor is gratitude. When we dwell on our difficulties rather than appreciating all the things we have to be grateful for, we may find ourselves being led to the place we truly wish to be. Shifting our focus from problems to gratitude can transform our perspective and guide us toward our desired state of mind. Gratitude is not just an emotion; it’s a powerful mindset that can shape our experiences and direct our journey.

Happiness may be attained by following the path of thankfulness.
