“The Heart of Happiness: Discovering Lasting Joy”
I will always remember “The Magic of Thinking Big,” a book by Dr. David J. Schwartz, a renowned motivational speaker. After his six-year-old son finished kindergarten, Dr. Schwartz asked him about his career aspirations. Without hesitation, the child replied, “I want to be a professor.” Dr. Schwartz then asked, “What kind of professor?” His son responded, “Well, Dad, I think I want to be a professor of happiness.” Don’t you think that’s a wonderful goal, being a “happiness professor”? This book is dedicated to David and his mother, two great young people with admirable goals.
If we asked someone who had lost their sight to describe light, we would receive the most precise explanation. Similarly, if we asked someone who had lost their freedom to explain it, we might hear the most profound reasoning. However, I don’t believe it’s necessary to ask anyone to define happiness.
The majority of individuals believe that pleasure is the outcome of subjective qualities and immeasurable circumstances. Some people see happiness as an “all or nothing” concept. When asked, “What makes a good day for you?” Arancha Sanchez-Vicario, one of the world’s top tennis players, responded, “A day that makes me happy.”
“Happiness lies within our hearts. Through self-love, self-discovery, and positive connections, we unlock lasting joy.”
There is no straightforward path to happiness; instead, we must reshape our own paradigms. What does this mean? It suggests that rather than spending our lives searching for happiness, we should continuously and steadfastly commit ourselves to developing the skills needed to experience personal fulfillment. Humans often overlook the happiness in their surroundings, and the more opportunities they have for joy, the more discontent they perceive. Time becomes irrelevant for genuinely content individuals; they rarely check their watches. For those truly happy, there are no insurmountable problems. They live their lives with almost constant smiles.
What steps can we take to transition to this new way of living?
Instead of constantly asking ourselves what we need to do to achieve total happiness, we should focus on what to stop doing, what to avoid, and what to occasionally distance ourselves from in order to enhance our happiness. Fear of coming across properly or improperly may interfere with our enjoyment. From our early formative years to our senior years, we have enjoyed this hardship.
The issue arises because we are accustomed to others dictating what is right and wrong, correct and incorrect. When it comes to cultivating our own happiness, we must balance the guidance of moral and social norms with the fundamental freedom of ethical self-determination.
“The heart of happiness beats within us, fueled by self-love, gratitude, and embracing our true selves.”
Our goals and aspirations each have their unique journeys, whether they relate to work, education, business, family, health, success, perfection, glory, or vitality. Finding and pursuing this path can bring us true happiness. This belief provides us with significant energy, spiritual guidance, and inner strength to confidently follow our path and face challenges with grace. As a result, we must devise techniques for putting up our best effort every day, carefully weighing all of our thoughts, words, and acts, and determining if they make us happy or sad.
The ultimate aim is to attain complete contentment. Many seek it, but only a few achieve it independently.
