The five options to build happiness
We’ve all met individuals who appear consistently content. You may have made the assumption that those people are unquestionably happy, that they are the fortunate ones who live healthy lives, or that their parents were unquestionably loving. Nothing could be further from the truth most of the time.
People who are content with their lives make deliberate choices in how they think and act. They consciously choose thoughts and behaviors that contribute to their happiness. Conversely, unhappy individuals often engage in thoughts and behaviors that lead to feelings of depression, often without realizing it.
Here are five specific choices that content individuals tend to make:
OPTIMISM
While unhappy individuals tend to adopt a pessimistic outlook and see the glass as half empty, happy individuals choose to see it as half full. Positive thinking is a conscious choice about how one perceives life; it doesn’t happen by chance. Optimistic individuals are hopeful because they make the choice to be optimistic. Happy people prioritize their loving, mature selves and remain open to the wonderful opportunities that life presents, rather than allowing their ego-driven selves to dominate with all its dread and gloom. Content individuals understand that their thoughts mark the beginning of a creative process that leads to manifestation. By thinking positively, they empower themselves to take actions that bring their dreams to fruition.
KINDNESS
Those who are content choose to treat themselves and others with kindness and compassion. Content individuals have realized that their interactions with themselves and others significantly impact their emotional state. They don’t wait for external circumstances to be kind to themselves and others. Instead of creating their own inner peace, they understand that it is the source of their excellent behaviour. They consistently demonstrate kindness, compassion, and empathy, regardless of their emotional state. Their happiness is a product of their decision to be this way.
FORGIVENESS
Even individuals who have been unkind and hurtful towards them cannot elicit feelings of resentment from unhappy individuals. They become aware of how depressed being resentful makes them, so they decide to accept other people for who they are and forgive them for their harmful behavior. They don’t experience emotional hurt in the same way that people who take others’ actions personally do because cheerful people generally don’t take, in my opinion, others’ careless behavior personally. Joyful people flow into compassion for themselves and others rather than into judgment because they understand that another person’s behavior is undoubtedly about that other person.
ACCEPTANCE
Content individuals have a clear understanding of what is within their control and what is not. They live by the principles of the Serenity Prayer, accepting what cannot be changed and taking action to change what can. On the other hand, unhappy individuals constantly try to change others and their circumstances, refusing to accept that some things are beyond their control. This perpetual struggle leads to ongoing frustration. Happy individuals, however, recognize that they cannot control the actions of others or the outcomes of those actions. Instead, they focus on controlling their own thoughts and behaviors. Happiness and inner peace stem from accepting both what can and cannot be controlled.
GRATITUDE
Finally, happy people constantly express gratitude for what they have rather than whining about what they lack. They often show appreciation for the simple things in their lives, such as the beauty of nature, the food they eat, a friend’s smile, and their ability to see, hear, walk, and communicate. They recognize the many gifts and blessings in their lives. Even individuals with disabilities, who may lack sight, hearing, speech, or the use of their legs, can often find happiness because they focus on what they have and what they can do, rather than what they lack.
In the end
To achieve happiness, it’s important to understand that your current actions and behaviors should be aimed at making you happy, rather than expecting happiness to come solely from external sources. No matter your circumstances, if you choose to focus on becoming aware of the thoughts and behaviors that make you happy, you may develop into a happy person. It takes effort to be happy; it doesn’t just happen.
