The Feeling of Emotions and Personal Growth

In an old, humorous anecdote, a lady takes a leisurely stroll along the street one Sunday morning. As she walks, she notices another woman, clearly inebriated, on her hands and knees. Curiosity piqued, she approaches and kindly inquires, “What are you searching for?” The intoxicated woman, without missing a beat, slurs her response, “My house keys.” Surprised, the first lady asks, “Where did you drop them?” To which the drunk woman confidently replies, “Two streets away.” Perplexed, the first lady questions, “Then why are you looking here?” With a hint of exasperation, the drunk woman explains, “Because the light is much brighter here.” The anecdote humorously highlights how our perceptions can be skewed when we are in a less-than-sober state, leading us to search for solutions in the wrong places, guided by unreliable perceptions.

As I advance in my basic education, I’ve begun to experience a sense of uncertainty about myself. Surprisingly, even I am not immune to it. Some might argue that I have veered significantly from my initial path. When I was doubtful of my ability to succeed, I tried self-hypnosis, meditation, self-love, personal growth, and other NLP techniques to overcome my doubts. However, none of them seemed to work for me.

“Everyone is traveling a separate route, and their decisions will determine everything.”

However, I felt nervous and lacked true self-confidence. I felt afraid of acting on my desires (what if everything went wrong, and I failed?). The feeling quickly faded after I reminded myself, “Kiersti, simply embrace it, postpone rejecting it, refrain from fighting it; just acknowledge it.” The sensation of worry briefly lingered before dissipating. I was quite astonished. All the months and years spent trying to evade it finally paid off, and all I needed to do was begin experiencing it. I acknowledged this and stopped resisting.

Doing this will increase your awareness of your unique sector map.

One of the core principles of NLP is to meet people where they are on their own world map. This approach involves understanding situations from their perspective or being aware of their experiences, which is a much deeper topic for another discussion. I became adept at applying this principle with other people, as demonstrated by the success of my therapeutic consulting practice over the years. However, many years ago, before all of that began, I suddenly realized that I hadn’t been aligning myself with my own map of the world.

Battle with yourself

You understand the truth behind the saying: “When you fight with yourself, someone always loses, and that someone is you.” Whenever I faced uncomfortable sensations, my instinct was to struggle, endure, and fight against them. However, I’ve made a choice to embrace and manage my feelings instead of avoiding or battling them.

So, what’s the point of all this? First, describe the sensation, especially if it’s unpleasant, seems pointless, or is simply something you don’t enjoy. This is merely a process to pinpoint where that emotion resides in your body; identify that feeling there. Now, consider its size and how it moves. For example, I used to experience a fluttering sensation in the pit of my stomach that, if resisted, might travel to my chest and cause me to retreat. Consider the temperature of the sensation, and taking it a step further, imagine what color it would be if it had one. Become fully aware of the physiological aspects of the experience.

Despite the common belief that people understand their emotions, many are actually quite unaware of the physical characteristics of the emotions they experience. Instead, they allow these emotions to exist passively without truly being conscious of them. The initial step is to chart out these physical sensations, which can manifest as chemicals or in any other form.

Afterward, immerse yourself in the experience.

“Learn to accept the fact that you do indeed feel it. “

Certainly, for some people, this might seem like a struggle, and they may resist, thinking, “But I don’t want to feel it” or “I shouldn’t be feeling this.” I understand that some of you may be curious about this process.

The truth is, you are experiencing it, and the quickest way to change your feelings is to align yourself with your own world map and accept the feeling of provision you are experiencing. If you resist doing this, you are simply fighting it, as I did in the past, and that’s all that’s happening. Any attempt to make a change will therefore start from a position where you aren’t, which almost never leads to success (as illustrated by our tipsy man searching for his keys on the wrong street).

The great cause is then discovered. What message is your body or unconscious mind trying to convey to you? Sometimes, our emotions are attempting to communicate with us. There is a reason why our bodies sometimes only perceive emotions as physical sensations. What purpose does this sensation serve for you, or is it trying to convey a message?

Then, experience it fully. Simply allow yourself to go through it. Don’t resist or enter into a struggle; just embrace it. Remember to breathe as well.

It doesn’t take much time to perceive something, but it’s much more beneficial to actually do it. Even if it’s painful, the ability to feel it indicates that you’re alive (yay!), and it also shows that you’re in touch with your emotions. These are all important things that you need to recognize and comprehend for yourself. Simply acknowledging and accepting a sensation can often provide a much clearer perspective.

The last step in this process is to play with the sensation.

“Be always conscious of your emotions and where they originate.”

Intensify your feelings, then lessen them. If it was one color, change it to another; if it was moving in one direction, change it to another; if it had a particular size, increase or decrease it; essentially, experiment with it and see how much influence you have over this sensation. I think you’ll be amazed at the amount of control you actually possess.

In conclusion

As you delve into this practice, you’ll gradually realize the extent to which you can exert control over your emotions. You might come to understand that certain feelings are unfounded or misinterpreted, merely bodily sensations devoid of inherent meaning. By resisting these sensations, you may inadvertently prolong their presence, but by acknowledging and accepting them, you open the door to modifying and even transforming them. However, this does not imply that you will never experience unpleasant sensations again.

The more you engage in this practice, the more likely it becomes that you will start to experience the kind of feelings you desire. Sensations will come and go, and emotions will fluctuate. I believe that, regardless of what you do in life, you can strive to punctuate it with increasingly positive emotions, don’t you agree?

So, enjoy your day, and make sure you’re bringing some positive sentiments into your life.
